Bio

My research activities are on planktonic ecology, pelagic ecosystems, ecological modeling, physics-biology interactions and automatic classification methods applied to plankton. I have been part of the IEO research staff since 2001. Before joining the IEO, I did my doctoral thesis at the IIM-CSIC under the supervision of professors Fiz F. Pérez and Aida F. Ríos, on temporal variability of hydrographic and biogeochemical conditions in the Ría de Vigo, and I worked as an EU post-doctoral fellow (Marie Curie scholarships) with professors JD Woods at Imperial College London, in modeling the planktonic ecosystem, and with Frederic Ibanez at the Center Oceanologique de Villefranche-sur-mer, in the study of plankton community dynamics.

My professional skills include oceanographic sampling (CTD-rosette, AMP-type automatic profilers, multi-aperture plankton nets), analysis of planktonic components by traditional methods (microscopy) and automatic methods based on image capture and analysis (FlowCAM, ZooScan, LOPC-laser optics plankton counter), application of acoustic methods for evaluation of small pelagic fish (multi-frequency and multi-beam scientific echo sounders) and numerical analysis methods (multi-variant techniques, time series, SVM-type classification algorithms) and modeling (models based on individuals). To date (April 2019): I have participated in 21 competitive national and European research projects, in 6 of them as coordinator / principal investigator; published 46 research papers in indexed specialized journals and books; participated in more than 30 oceanographic research campaigns and evaluation of small pelagic fish using acoustic methods, in 10 of them as coordinator; and supervised 2 Master’s Theses and 3 Doctoral Theses that have obtained the classification of outstanding cum laude, and 1 Doctoral Thesis in progress.
