Beatriz Reguera is a Senior Scientist at the Harmful Microalgae Group of the IEO Oceanographic Centre in Vigo (NW Spain). She enjoyed in her early career days two scholarships from the British Council in CEFAS (Aquaculture Department, Lowestoft, UK, 3 months in 1980-1981) and at the University of East Anglia (School of Environmental Sciences, UEA, Norwich, UK, October 1982-December 1983). Since 1984 she settled in the IEO-Vigo Centre and focused her plankton expertise on the investigation and management of toxin-producing microalgae events. Over 25 years of experience in phytoplankton ecology with focus on Harmful Algal Blooms characterization of toxic species, population dynamics, physiology and monitoring. In the last decade has focused her research on plankton species (Dinophysis spp.) that cause Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) events, the main cause of lengthy shellfish harvesting closures in Atlantic coastal waters in Europe.

She has published over 100 articles on the above mentioned issues in national and SCI international journals, worked as principal investigator (PI) in national and European Union funded projects and supervised master and PhD students. Member of the editorial board of Harmful Algae (Elsevier) and frequent reviewer of articles for other plankton-related SCI journals. She has also worked as editor/coeditor of HAB Conference proceedings and manuals.

Spanish delegate at the IOC Intergovernmental Panel on Harmful Algal Blooms (IPHAB) (Chair 2002-2006); member of the SCOR-IOC GEOHAB Scientific Steering Committee (2002-2006); member (Spain) of the ICES-IOC Working Group on HAB Dynamics (Chair 1992-1996). Council member of the International Society for the Study of Harmful Algae (ISSHA), Vice-president (2004-2008) and President (2008 to date). She had an active role in the establishment of the IOC-IEO Science and Communication Centre on Harmful Algae (Vigo, 1996-2011), has worked as consultant for United Nations agencies (FAO, IAEA, IOC) in Latin America and Northern Africa and in training courses sponsored by these agencies. In 2011 she received an IOC 50^thAnniversary Medal in recognition for outstanding contribution to the international HAB programme.
